Market Day in Toledo, Swedish Mid-century Oil Painting, Signed & Dated

A joyful original oil on board depicting a charming scene in Toledo, Spain. A barefoot woman in a white dress carries a bowl of red fruit balanced on her head beside a large stone wall, while a man rides a donkey with a hay-filled cart passing beneath a stone archway.

The Swedish painting has a wonderfully characterful palette of taupes, red, yellow-green, pale blue and bright blue, giving the scene a lively and uplifting quality.

Signed and dated 1966, the painting remains in its original light stone-painted wooden frame with linen mount. The reverse is inscribed “Old Market, Toledo, Spain.”

There is a very small area of paint loss to the painting, shown in the close-up photograph. It is minor and unobtrusive, and does little to detract from the overall charm of the piece. There is also a small amount of fraying to the edge of the linen mount, only noticeable on close inspection.

A cheerful and distinctive mid-century painting with a lovely sense of place, colour and movement.
