This original oil on canvas painting of sailboats by Swedish artist Sven Nilsson (b.1928) is a really beautiful, atmospheric piece, painted in a soft palette of blues, greys, browns, with touches of white and black. The brushstrokes are loose and expressive, giving the water and sails a gentle sense of movement while still feeling calm and balanced.
It is presented in a simple box frame which really lets the painting sing. The frame shows subtle traces of the artist’s hand, with a few gentle paint marks that add to its unique, vintage character.
Born in Lund, Sweden in 1928, Sven Nilsson trained at the Essem Painting School in Malmö in the early 1950s. He began exhibiting in 1959 and went on to show his work at a number of respected venues, including Lunds Konsthall, Galleri Atheneum at Lund University, and Kristianstads Museum. His work is also held in several Swedish museum collections, including Malmö, Helsingborg, and Kristianstad.
The painting is signed by the artist.
